Raising Achievement, Transforming Learning

Learning and Teaching at The Mountfitchet Mathematics and Computing College reflects the most recent educational research about how children learn most effectively. It has been has shown that we have multiple intelligences. This means children learn in different ways, some through written words, others through images and sounds, others through movement (and so on).

At The Mountfitchet Mathematics and Computing College the individual learning styles of children are identified at an early stage. Teachers then use this information to plan their teaching strategies so that all children can achieve their potential. Learning and Teaching is, therefore, highly personalised.

We also focus on building skills for life. Students lead activities that help them to work in teams and compete for places at university and for jobs. Our work has attracted the attention of national publications, like "Managing Schools Today" and "Teaching Thinking & Creativity". Essex County Council has asked us to introduce this work to other schools.

For example:
  • Students are trained in thinking, team-work and communication skills, based on methods used in business, e.g. Edward de Bono’s tools
  • Our "Serve to Lead" scheme is a student-led service and leadership programme, giving real jobs to every student in a form. Supported by tutors, students set goals, design projects and lead teams. Already, students have led assemblies, improved college gardens and implemented a business plan to set up a profitable stationery business.
  • Student Officers of our "SOL" ("Study of Life") Society plan and lead a college programme of debates, discussions, outside speakers, trips to galleries, museums, etc. Members support each other in their learning and through regular social gatherings.
